Enlightenment is pretty much universally described as coming in a moment of no-mind, no-striving. There isn't (apart from some Zen views) really anything you can "do" to get it.

Satori, Enlightenment's little short lived cousin, can be induced through various practices, and happens quite naturally for many people in the normal course of life.

If you've had a moment – maybe by yourself, with a lover, a sunset or in meditation – where life "stands still" for a moment, a sense of peace and unity with everything is experienced, you've had a satori.

|Satori is the flash of lightning which illuminates reality. For a moment, you see that which is, existence, God, The Divine, the truth.

Zen techniques are designed to induce Satori. Although they miss the plot slightly, some mass therapy group squirreled out of Scientology are pretty reliable at inducing Satori.

The Osho Multiversity has a huge variety of groups replete with opportunities for the keen Satori hunter.

At the right time, and under expert care and supervision, fasting, doing long headstands, mantra chanting, ritual devotion and some drugs may be useful. After one Satori, the method used soon becomes inneffectual. These approaches rely on weakening some aspect of the mind, getting it out of the way, allowing Satori to occur. Obviously, Satori through these practices comes at a price - though maybe it's worth it…
